Sadly, most animals in Australia are not protected by any enforceable legislation. 'Production' animals used for meat, dairy and egg production, as well as other animals used to produce fibres such as wool, are excluded from the protecion of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTA) in the name of profit.

Other animals that suffer are those used in rodeos, circuses, breeding facilities, theme parks, or are hunted for sport.

Some of the major industries that are allowed exemption from the Act are;

> the Intensive Pork Industry
> the Battery hen industry
> the Intensive Meat Chicken (Broiler) Industry
> the Wool Industry
