Jackie is a passionate advocate for animals.
“It is a horrible irony that in an age where we have
the knowledge and technology to produce our food both naturally
and humanely that many western nations, Australia included,
are resorting more and more to intensive methods of farming
where there is very little concern for the animal's welfare,
the conditions in which they live and die .
I can’t believe that anyone can justify forcing an
animal that scientists believe is as intelligent as a dog
to stand for days on end, with no option of turning, sitting
or sleeping, all so that piglets can wean sooner, grow faster
and make more money. We live in an age where people acknowledge
that animals feel pain, distress and discomfort and yet
there are some who are prepared to ignore these facts to
make greater profits.
It is all too easy to disconnect the animal from the product,
everyone does it, but I think if people were more aware
of the truly torturous conditions that many pigs are forced
to endure they would turn away from this kind of farming
method and demand change.
Many people have already made the switch from battery hens
and eggs to free-range or organic eggs and chickens having
learnt the shocking truth of those methods. Consequently
the people that farm chickens are changing their practice
accordingly."
